Litter Picking Summary 6th + 9th January 2019

The total bag count for 2018 was 529 – an amazing effort.

Our 2019 picks started off on Saturday 6th January.  10 volunteers met at Bank Square.  Most roads in and around the town centre were covered as far out as Altrincham Road, Kennerleys Lane, Chapel Lane, Albert Road, Parkway, the link road to A34 Bypass, the Railway station forecourt, the Leisure Centre, Broadway Meadows car park, Parish Hall car park and Sainsbury’s car park. At least 17 bags were collected, plus some recyclables.

The town centre seemed worse then normal – the committee will try and find out whether the council has cut down the scheduled cleans – and whether they suspend cleaning over Christmas.  Cigarette butts were everywhere – in all the doorways, gutters, storm drains and even in the planters that the town council have installed.

These blue plastic “takeaway” forks are particularly troublesome – as they have often disintegrated into lots of very small pieces – making them difficult to pick up.

One of our volunteers asked the committee to request that a new bin be installed in the Broadway Meadows car park as the litter there was bad. A request was sent to Ansa – but there is no budget remaining this financial year for new bins – and it is not clear if there will be budget come April.

Our second pick of the year was on Wednesday 9th January.  6 volunteers met at Lacey Green Park.  We focused on the surrounding area and collected 10 bags and a traffic cone.

So – 27 bags at our scheduled picks plus at least 2 more by our “solo” volunteers.

Thanks and well done to all our volunteers – new volunteers are always welcome.

Litter Picking Summary 5th + 8th December 2018

8 volunteers met at Wilmslow Garden Centre on Wednesday 5th December.  It  was a horrible rainy day.   The conditions meant that we decided to finish early at 11am for a well earned hot drink. We collected 11 bags which, under the circumstances, was a brilliant effort.

Another 8 volunteers met at Summerfields on Saturday 8th December. We covered the surrounding area including Colshaw Drive. We collected 26 bags of litter plus some recyclables and a lot of debris including 2 clothes airers and several supermarket baskets.

So – 34 bags in total at our 2 scheduled picks plus some further bags collected on solo picks by our volunteers over the past month. We have collected well over 500 bags during 2018.

Thanks and well done everyone.

Merry Christmas and see you all in the new year.

Litter Picking Summary 7th + 10th November 2018

5 volunteers met at Bank Square on Wednesday 7th November. We spread out covering the town centre, Wilmslow Station and the area around the Leisure Centre.  We collected 6 bags.

We have identified a major litter ‘grot spot’ : the private area to the right hand side of the Co-op shop on Water Lane.  We think that this is an area where office workers are sitting on the wall to eat their lunch and/or have a smoke.  We are going to progress this issue further.

wilmslow clean team airport tunnels november 20185 people met at The Honey Bee on Saturday 10th November. We covered both sides of Altrincham Road between the Honey Bee and the Airport tunnels as well as part of Morley Green Road.  We also covered the lanes between the tunnels and the Holiday Inn. This is another major “grot spot” where take away wrappers and drinks bottles/cans are thrown into the bushes (making it hard to collect). We picked a total of 10 bags and one large sheet of metal.

Some of our volunteers have also been out on solo picks recently. At least 7 more bags were collected on Knutsford Road, the town centre, Morley Green Road, Altrincham Road and the side streets near Gorsey Bank School.

So – at least 23 bags collected since the October picks. Thanks and well done everyone.

Litter Picking Summary 3rd + 6th October 2018

8 volunteers met at The King’s Arms on Wednesday 3rd September. We covered Alderley Road from Kenmore Medical Centre to the the A34 bypass, Knutsford Road as far as Lindow Cricket Club, Chapel Lane (and the surrounding streets), Parkway and the bushes in Sainsbury’s Car Park (near Parkway). We collected 10 bags.

6 volunteers met at Lindow Common on Saturday 6th September. We covered Lindow Common, Altrincham Road from Hawthorn Street to Waters, Buckingham Road and Little Lindow. The play area in Little Lindow was particularly bad – even though there is a bin in that area – right next to the bench !  Is this really the kind of environment we want our little ones to be playing in?  And what kind of a message is it sending to them at an impressionable age ?  We collected at least 9 bags of litter and a few recyclables.

So – a total of at least 19 bags in our 2 scheduled October picks.

Well done everyone and hope to see you in November.

Litter Picking Summary 5th + 8th September 2018

7 volunteers met at Bank Square on Wednesday 5th September.  We focused on the town centre.  One volunteer found a lot of rubbish hidden by bushes in Sainsbury’s car park – including a particularly bad area around a bench near the walkway to Parkway (the bench gas clearly been moved there illegally). 10 bags plus sundry some hub caps were collected altogether.

We had 7 volunteers out and about at our Summerfields pick on Saturday 8th September.  Despite the miserable weather we managed to collect 12 bags altogether.  We covered the surrounding area including Dean Row Road, Colshaw Drive and the roads near the bypass.  3 volunteers spent an hour doing the hedgerow on one side of Howty Close alone – there is so much litter in this area.

So – 22 bags, plus some recyclables on our 2 scheduled September picks plus some extra bags collected by some of our other volunteers on solo picks.

Thanks and well done everyone.

Litter Picking Summary 1st + 4th August 2018

Before summarising our August picks, it is worth mentioning a couple of extra litter picks that we did in July :

1) 5 volunteers helped clean up after the Wilmslow show on Monday 9th July. We collected 5 bags altogether.

2) Several volunteers performed a litter pick on the evening of Monday 23rd July in preparation for the annual “Britain In Bloom” judging the next morning.  This is an event which we have been involved with for the past few years. We collected 15 bags altogether.

9 volunteers met at The Honey Bee on Wednesday 1st August for the first of our 2 scheduled monthly picks. We cleaned from the junction with Nansmoss Road to the tunnel mouths. We also covered the pieces of old road behind the Airport Inn, and the unnamed road leading off Altrincham Road towards the barrier for Manchester Airport Fire Station. The verges here were particularly bad – it is known that truck drivers pull in here to have a break. We also did part of Altrincham Road by the Jim Edison playing fields.  We checked Nansmoss Road, Mobberley Road, and Morley Green Road which were all clean – thanks to the ongoing efforts of one of our volunteers (Liz). We collected 14 bags plus pieces of cardboard. Many thanks to The Honey Bee for allowing us to use the car park.

8 volunteers met at the Parish Hall on Saturday 4th August. We covered the Carrs, The Memorial Gardens and the surrounding area – spreading out as far as Grove Street and Water Lane. One volunteer headed off by car to cover Prestbury Road. We collected 11 bags altogether along with some recyclables.

So – 25 bags in our 2 scheduled August picks, 20 more in our 2 “one off” picks in July plus lots more by our volunteers who go out on their own in-between the scheduled picks

Thanks and well done everyone.

Litter Picking Summary 4th + 7th July 2018

Wilmslow Clean Team Bank Square 4th July 20187 volunteers met at Bank Square on Wednesday 4th July. It was a clear, dry and hot day without a cloud in the sky and some might say perfect conditions for a litter pick.

We focused on the town centre from Chapel Lane to Station Road including Sainbury’s car park, the Leisure Centre, Church Street, Swan Street, Mill Street, Manchester Road, Albert Road, Water Lane, Hawthorne Lane and part of Alderley Road.

A section of domestic metal railing was found dumped in the undergrowth surrounding Bank Square. It must have been removed with considerable force from wherever it was anchored.

We collected a total of 8 bags of litter.

Wilmslow Clean Team Lacey Green 7th August 20188 volunteers met at Lacey Green Park on Saturday 7th July. It was another very hot morning .  We covered a lot of the surrounding area and collected a further 8 bags.

So – 16 bags altogether in the July picks along with some recyclables.

Litter Picking Summary 6th + 9th June 2018

5 volunteers met at Summerfields on Wednesday 6th June.  We covered the surrounding area including Colshaw Drive. We collected at least 8 bags and took home some recyclables. We also reported some fly tipping in the area, including a few council silver bins, to ANSA.

Wilmslow Clean Team Dean Row Road June 20186 volunteers met at The Unicorn on Saturday 9th June.  We covered the surrounding area including Woodford Road (as far as The Deanwater), Dean Row Road as far as Turing Drive, and Adlington Road (as far as Wilmslow Park North).  We collected 11 bags, an advertising placard, 2 wheel hubs and some plastic piping. Many thanks to The Unicorn for allowing us to use their car park.

So – a total of 19 bags in the scheduled June litter picks – well done everyone.

Litter Picking Summary 2nd + 5th May 2018

Fortunately it stopped raining at 10:00 on Wednesday 2nd May – just as our litter pick began. 4 volunteers met at The Honey Bee and covered Altrincham Road, from Nansmoss Lane down to the roundabout near the airport tunnels, plus the old road by the Airport Inn. We collected 9 bags, a bucket, 2 wheel trims, a traffic cone, 2 sandbags, a poster, and a metal box.

Much better weather on Saturday 5th May saw 10 volunteers meet at Anthology. We spread out in all directions covering a lot of the town centre including The Lesiure Centre, Sainsbury’s car park, Alderley Road, Knutsford Road, Grove Street, Hawthorne Lane, Altrincham Road and the area down towards the railway viaduct. We collected at least 14 bags plus some recyclables.

So – approximately 23 bags in our scheduled picks this month.

Volunteers have also been out on their own this month. Areas covered include Morley Green Road, Strawberry Lane, Chapel Lane, Lindfield Estate South and Clifford Road.

We would like to thank Anthology for the use of their car park.

Thanks and well done to all our volunteers.

Summary Of Spring Clean 2018

Four formal litter picks were organised by the the Wilmslow Clean Team during our Spring Clean week which ran from 2nd April to the 8th April 2018. Some of our volunteers also contributed by going out on their own (e.g. on Alderley Road, Knutsford Road Morley Green Road and Mobberley Road).

wilmslow spring clean 2018 wednesday lindow common11 volunteers met at Lindow Common on Wednesday 4th April. We focused on the surrounding area including Altrincham Road. We collected a huge total of around 30 bags. We are very grateful to the Boddington Arms (Harvester) for providing us with complementary hot drinks afterwards.  Many thanks to Leanne and Holiday Inn Hotels for their ongoing support with the litter picking and for supplying us with some labels for our rubbish bags.

Around 10 volunteers met at the junction of Moor Lane and Cumber Lane – for an evening litter pick.  This was an area we had not really tackled before.  We spread out in various directions and covered Rotherwood Rd, Moor Lane, Cumber Lane, Chapel Lane, the area around Lindow School, Morley Lane bridle path (Rotherwood Lane), the paths leading to the top of Strawberry Lane, Arlington Way and Knutsford Road. We also sent a car over to tackle Sainsbury’s car park. We collected around 17 bags in the hour or so that we were out and about.  We then retreated to The Horse & Jockey for a well earned drink and a chat. We would like to thank our MP, Esther McVey, for helping us with this litter pick and for the publicity she gave to our Spring Clean on Twitter.

wilmslow spring clean 2018 saturday sainsburys10 volunteers met at The King’s Arms on a damp Saturday morning. We covered Alderley Road, Holly Road South, Holly Road North, Parkway, Broadway, The Leisure Centre, Knutsford Road amd the town centre. wilmslow spring clean 2018 sunday summerfields10 volunteers met at Wilmslow Garden Centre on Sunday 8th April.  It was great to welcome 2 new volunteers to this event. We also had a 3rd new volunteer who picked up some equipment so that he can do some litter picking in his local area (Macclesfield Road , Wilmslow Park / Bollin Valley).  We covered Manchester Road, the children’s park off Dean Drive and the wooded valley behind, the wooded area to the north of the Garden Centre car park, Staneylands Road and Colshaw Drive. We collected about 16 bags altogether plus some recyclables. Many thanks to Wilmslow Garden Centre for allowing us to use their car park.

The total bag haul so far in April is 90 – which is a stunning effort – well done everyone! It’s quite hard pulling all the information together from dozens of emails – so many apologies if we have missed anyone out in the report.
