News Update : 27-FEB-23

Since the last news update, we have:

a) Continued with our twice monthly litter picks :

8 volunteers met at Bank Square on Wednesday 1st February.  We covered the surrounding area including the station, the leisure centre, Sainsbury’s car park and the Bollin Link Road. We collected at least 14 bags and some recyclables. Many thanks to the 2 “Pets At Home” staff who came along.

An even higher turnout of 12 volunteers met at The Honey Bee on Saturday 5th March.  We collected at least 21 bags and some recyclables. We focussed on Altrincham Road and the area near the airport tunnels.  One volunteer went over to the Prestbury Road and did the verges on the roundabout at the back of the high school. Thanks to Elliot who came along with his father – he has been doing a great job as part of his Duke Of Edinburgh award.

b) Continued with our solo picks.

c) Continued trials with the new trolley – and received interest from a volunteer who is keen to use it in future.

c) Liaised with Wilmslow Town Council about the degree of involvement in the coronation related activities being planned in the town. We have decided to re-jig our May picks. We have swapped the locations and we have moved the Saturday pick to the following Monday. This is so that we aren’t clashing with the coronation.  It also means we can be in the town centre and therefore more visible for “The Big Help Out” on the Monday :

In tribute to His Majesty The King’s public service, The Big Help Out will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas. The aim of The Big Help Out is to use volunteering to bring communities together and create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation Weekend.”

News Update : 01-OCT-22

Since the last news update we have:

a) Continued with our twice monthly litter picks :

4 volunteers met at Summerfields on Wednesday 7th September. We covered the surrounding area and collected 6 bags. We also asked ANSA to remove some debris.

7 volunteers met at The Farmers Arms on Saturday 10th September. We covered the surrounding area.

b) Continued with our solo picks.

c) Altogether this month we have collected at least 25 bags.

d) Responded to a contact made by Skipton Building Society who want to support us in their community initiative.  It looks like we will receive between £200 and £500 (depending on member votes). We are suggesting that this funds some trolleys to lighten the load of the heavy bags when we are litter picking.

e) Started planning for a committee meeting where we can discuss the results of some research into alternative options for our insurance.  The proposal is that we stay with the current provider.

f) Contacted ANSA about the removal of a broken pushchair on Broadway

g) Held discussions with another potential sponsor.

i) Lent some equipment to 7th Wilmslow guides – we really appreciate their ongoing efforts to help keep Wilmslow tidy.

j) Responded to enquiries from some potential new volunteers

k) Asked ANSA for more information about “mixed recycling” litter bins  (as spotted in Macclesfield)

Please try to arrive at the meeting point no later than 15 minutes from the start time. Organisers of each event will typically litter pick after the 15 minute period has elapsed, returning to the meeting point up to an hour later.

 

Litter Picking Event – Wednesday 4th Jan 2023

Regular litter picking event. Focus will be Knutsford Road / Alderley Road / Chapel Lane / Bypass roundabout.

New volunteers are most welcome to come along – but please familiarise yourselves with the safety guidance first.

Please try to arrive at the meeting point no later than 15 minutes from the start time. Organisers of each event will typically litter pick after the 15 minute period has elapsed, returning to the meeting point up to an hour later.

News Update : 29-DEC-21

Since the last news update we have:

a) Continued with our twice monthly litter picks :

7 volunteers met at Bank Square on Wednesday 1st December.  We covered the surrounding area including Bank Square, Green Lane, Church Street including the children’s playground on the Carrs, Bollin Link, Hawthorn Lane, Hawthorn Avenue and Parkway.  We collected at least 8 bags

5 volunteers met in Summerfields car park on a miserable morning on Saturday 4th December.  We covered the surrounding area including Colshsaw Drive and collected 11 bags and some recyclables (which were taken home and put in the grey bins)

b) Continued with our solo picks.

c) Reported several incidents of fly tipping to ANSA.  One of them, on Colshaw Drive, was not on council owned land and so ANSA informed the housing association.

d) Held a meeting to review the roles on the committee

e) After some further committee discussion about levels of insurance cover, we cancelled the recently purchased policy with Zurich and renewed with our original provider.

f) Started discussions about how we can support some year 9 pupils at the high school who want to do litter picking for the volunteering section of their Duke of Edinburgh award.

January 2020 Litter Pick Summary And Other News

A Happy New Year to all our volunteers and supporters.

We normally arrange 2 litter picks every month : on the first Wednesday and following Saturday As January’s Wednesday pick would have fallen on New Years Day this year, we moved it a week later.

So, our first pick of 2020 was on Saturday 4th January.  We had an amazing turnout with 16 volunteers – possibly a record. We met at Bank Square and spread out in all directions. Having so many volunteers allowed us to cover most of the town centre – which is looking a lot tidier as a result.

Wilmslow Clean Team Fly Tipping Broadway Meadows Jan 2020We were concerned by the amount of litter in and around Broadway Meadows car park – and the lack of bins.  We have tried and failed in the past to get a new bin installed (due to a lack of funding) but we have asked ANSA (Cheshire East’s contractor) once again. ANSA confirmed that the request is still on their list for consideration. We have also asked ANSA to clean up the far end of the car park where the recycling bins used to be – and they have agreed to see to this. We have also asked them to remove a fly tipped tyre and paint from the bottom end of the car park.

We collected at least 29 bags, a tyre and at least I bag of recyclables at the Saturday pick.

Wilmslow Clean Team Lacey Green Park January 2020Our second pick of the year was on Wednesday 8th January. 8 volunteers met outside the gates of the park in Lacey Green on Barlow Moor Road.  We covered the whole of the park area, Barlow Moor Road, Lacey Green, halfway down Egerton Road, Cranford Road and Mount Pleasant – not a bad morning’s work.

We collected 12 bags of litter making it at least 41 in total at our 2 scheduled picks.

In addition, there have been a lot of solo picks recently which have helped us get off to a flying start in 2020 – with 56 bags collected altogether in the past month. Great work everyone.

The committee are going to discuss the possibility of some A boards which we can put up when we are doing litter picks – to raise awareness and attract new volunteers.

We made contact with “Run North West Limited” to discuss the issue of plastic bottle littering after their recent “Festive 10k” run

We are trying to help a Handforth resident who raised a concern about the amount of litter being thrown from cars on the bypass towards the airport. We have contacted ANSA to see if they can provide any further information / assistance.

Litter Picking Summary 2nd->5th December 2015

A really good turn out of 8 volunteers met at The Farmers Arms in Chaple Lane on Wednesday 2nd December.
We covered the surrounding area including Chapel Lane, Buckingham Road, Bourne Street, Lindfield Estate South, Nursery Lane, Bedells Lane, the Kings Arms roundabout, Albert Rd, Victoria road, part of Alderley Road, Grove Avenue, Water Lane, Oak Lane, Racecourse Road and Altrincham Road.
Afterwards we went to the Holiday Inn Express Hotel for free tea and coffee along with some lovely cakes. We would like to thank Holiday Inn, and especially Leanne Harrad, for their help on our litter picks and their general support for our work.
We collected 14 bags on the Wednesday pick.
On Saturday 5th December, 6 intrepid volunteers turned out in very windy weather and met at Summerfields. The area around the shops was impressive now that the shops have hired contractors to keep the area clean.  The area around the Colshaw housing estate was very bad though. We focussed on parts of the Colshaw estate, each end of Colshaw Drive, the whole of the footpath from Summerfields to the Polar Ford roundabout, the area around Energi gym and Dean Row Road towards Manchester Road.
We collected 15 bags on the Saturday pick.
So – a total of 29 bags in the 2 formal December litter picks – with more collected by individuals on ad-hoc litter picks.
