December 2019 Litter Pick Summary And Other News

On a sunny and crisp Wednesday morning,  9 volunteers met at The Farmer’s Arms on Chapel Lane.  We covered most of the roads in the area, with one member going off to do parts of Altrincham Road, as unfinished business from the last event based at The Honey Bee. We collected at least 13 bags of litter.  We also picked up a surprising number of nitrous oxide canisters in the gutter along Buckingham Road.

Six volunteers met at Summerfieds on Saturday 7th December. We covered both verges down to the A34 bypass, Colshaw Drive, Malpas Drive and Wheelock Close as well as Dean Row Road as far as the junction with Manchester Road. We collected a total of 11 bags of litter. We also took an additional bag of recyclable items (crushed plastic bottles and aluminium cans) away for domestic recycling.

One of our volunteers (Liz) discovered, on a solo pick, that the clean up after the recent 10k running event had not been very effective – with a lot of discarded, plastic water bottles. We are unsure who organised this event. Wilmslow Running Club are normally very good after their half marathon – so maybe this new event is organised by a different organisation?  Anyway – we have made Cheshire East aware.

Our total bag count for the year is 446 – an amazing effort.

The total number pf bags we have collected, in the 6 years since we were formed, has gone over the 3,000 mark. This is a remarkable achievement for a volunteer run organisation – although we would much rather be seeing a reduction in the amount of litter out there.

Please note that our first scheduled litter pick of 2020 is on Saturday 4th January.  Our Wednesday pick would normally have fallen on New Years Day – so we have pushed that one back a week until 8th January.

Well done everyone and thanks for all your hard work and support during the year. We wish all our volunteers a Merry Christmas and we hope to see you all again in the New Year.

Litter Picking Summary 5th + 8th June 2019

9 volunteers met at Summefields oWilmslow Clean Team Summerfields June 2019n Wednesday 9th June. We collected 17 bags of litter around the Summerfields/ Colshaw Drive area. We also collected various mattresses, supermarket trollies and other random items. We reported all this for collection by Ansa.

On a very wet Saturday 9 volunteers met on Chapel Lane. We spread out in different directions and collected 8 bags of litter from the surrounding streets. We were especially grateful to Chelsea flowers for providing hot drinks and The Farmer’s Arms for letting us park.

So – 25 bags altogether in our 2 scheduled June picks.

Summary Of Spring Clean 2019

Four formal litter picks were organised by the Wilmslow Clean Team during our Spring Clean week which ran from 1st April to the 7th April 2019. Some of our volunteers also contributed by going out on their own. Our spring clean fell nicely into the month long “Great British Spring Clean” initiative organised by Keep Britain Tidy

Wilmslow Clean Team Spring Clean 2019 - Dean Row10 volunteers met at The Unicorn in Dean Row on Monday 1st April for an hour long, evening pick. We focused on the surrounding area.  Some volunteers headed off to Summerfields.  Another drove further afield and picked from Prestbury Road, down to the Bollin and up as far as Wilmslow Park North – an area we haven’t covered much before and which was particularly bad. We collected 15 bags altogether and some hub caps. Some of us enjoyed a well earned drink in The Unicorn afterwards. We were very pleased to welcome 4 new volunteers. Thanks to The Unicorn for allowing us to use the car park.

On Wednesday 3rd April we met at Lindow Common. 11 volunteers collected 16 bags in the surrounding area. Again, we were delighted to welcome a new volunteer. 6 of us went to the Boddington Arms afterwards. We would like to thank them for providing us with a complementary hot drink – it was really appreciated.

Wilmslow Clean Team Spring Clean 2019 - Prestbury Road9 volunteers met at The Kings Arms on Saturday 6th April. We covered the surrounding area including Alderley Road, Knutsford Road and Chapel Lane. 2 volunteers drove further afield and picked Prestbury Road.  10 bags were collected altogether.  We would like to thank the Kings Arms for the use of their car park and for the offer of a hot drink (although I think we all had to head home after the pick). We reported some fly tipping on Prestbury Road to ANSA

Wilmslow Clean Team Spring Clean 2019 - Stanneylands RoadOur final Spring Clean pick was on Sunday 7th April. 7 volunteers met at Wilmslow Garden Centre. We covered the surrounding roads and woods. 2 volunteers drove down Stanneylands Road and covered the area from the hotel, down to the river and up the other side. This area was one of the worst we have seen. It’s not an area we cover very often but we very quickly filled 4 bags of litter and a whole bag of recyclables. The litter was just everywhere in what is a really picturesque part of the town. It’s possible that the huge house building exercise is contributing to the problem – we will have to monitor this situation. We collected 14 bags altogether along with a few hub caps. Thanks to the garden centre for the use of their car park.

So – a massive haul of 54 bags at our formal Spring Clean picks.  The total bag count in the last month is 60 and our total so far in 2019 is 165.

Thanks to everyone who came to the litter picks or supported us in other ways in what was a very successful Spring Clean.

As well as running our own litter picks, we have also been pushing ANSA to litter pick the A34 bypass.  We were pleased to see this happening last week.

Litter Picking Summary 6th + 9th March 2019

Litter Picking Summary 6th + 9th February 201911 volunteers met at Summerfields on Wednesday 6th March and covered most roads and verges in this area and the Colshaw Farm Estate.

We collected 13 bags, some recyclables and miscellaneous items including a shopping trolley, a children’s cycle, a contractors yellow flashing light a TV and a mattress.  We have informed ANSA as usual and asked them to collect everything.

We were pleased to welcome a new volunteer (Janet) to this litter pick.

We were also delighted to welcome back Jane and Michelle from Yorkshire Building Society. They used to be regulars on our picks as part of their commitment to community activities.  They will be coming occasionally on Wednesdays from now on which is brilliant news.

5 volunteers met at Bank Square on Saturday 9th March. We covered the Leisure Centre, Green Lane, Church St, Mill St, Bollin Link and the town centre towards Sainbury’s.

We collected 8 bags bringing the total over our 2 scheduled picks to 21.

Various volunteers have been out picking individually. This includes a pick by Chris, Colin, Sally, and Liz who collected 8 bags on Burleyhurst Lane, on 21st February, from Morley Green to the Mobberley parish boundary. They took some recyclables home including a large amount of gin bottles !

Our total for the calendar year is now 105

Thanks and well done everyone.

Litter Picking Summary 5th + 8th December 2018

8 volunteers met at Wilmslow Garden Centre on Wednesday 5th December.  It  was a horrible rainy day.   The conditions meant that we decided to finish early at 11am for a well earned hot drink. We collected 11 bags which, under the circumstances, was a brilliant effort.

Another 8 volunteers met at Summerfields on Saturday 8th December. We covered the surrounding area including Colshaw Drive. We collected 26 bags of litter plus some recyclables and a lot of debris including 2 clothes airers and several supermarket baskets.

So – 34 bags in total at our 2 scheduled picks plus some further bags collected on solo picks by our volunteers over the past month. We have collected well over 500 bags during 2018.

Thanks and well done everyone.

Merry Christmas and see you all in the new year.

Litter Picking Summary 5th + 8th September 2018

7 volunteers met at Bank Square on Wednesday 5th September.  We focused on the town centre.  One volunteer found a lot of rubbish hidden by bushes in Sainsbury’s car park – including a particularly bad area around a bench near the walkway to Parkway (the bench gas clearly been moved there illegally). 10 bags plus sundry some hub caps were collected altogether.

We had 7 volunteers out and about at our Summerfields pick on Saturday 8th September.  Despite the miserable weather we managed to collect 12 bags altogether.  We covered the surrounding area including Dean Row Road, Colshaw Drive and the roads near the bypass.  3 volunteers spent an hour doing the hedgerow on one side of Howty Close alone – there is so much litter in this area.

So – 22 bags, plus some recyclables on our 2 scheduled September picks plus some extra bags collected by some of our other volunteers on solo picks.

Thanks and well done everyone.

Litter Picking Summary 6th + 9th June 2018

5 volunteers met at Summerfields on Wednesday 6th June.  We covered the surrounding area including Colshaw Drive. We collected at least 8 bags and took home some recyclables. We also reported some fly tipping in the area, including a few council silver bins, to ANSA.

Wilmslow Clean Team Dean Row Road June 20186 volunteers met at The Unicorn on Saturday 9th June.  We covered the surrounding area including Woodford Road (as far as The Deanwater), Dean Row Road as far as Turing Drive, and Adlington Road (as far as Wilmslow Park North).  We collected 11 bags, an advertising placard, 2 wheel hubs and some plastic piping. Many thanks to The Unicorn for allowing us to use their car park.

So – a total of 19 bags in the scheduled June litter picks – well done everyone.

Litter Picking Summary 7th + 10th March 2018

wilmslow clean team march 2018 summerfields13 volunteers met at Summerfields on Wednesday 7th March. We focused on the surrounding area including Colshaw Drive.

The litter on the banks down to the railway tracks from the bridge on Dean Row Road is really bad. We have reported this to Network Rail and received a very positive – they are aiming to clean all this up in the 2nd week of April.

wilmslow clean team march 2018 canistersWe also reported an area of land near the railway bridge to Cheshire East (ANSA) because 2 whole bags were filled up with empty beer and wine bottles. ANSA confirmed that this is the back entrance to Wilmslow Cemetery and have flagged it up as an area where anti-social behaviour taking place.  We also found lots of empty nitrous oxide canisters.

We found some really disgusting areas where dozens of bagged up dog poo bags had been left in hedgerows and hanging on trees. This is unfortunately a common experience. Dog owners need to take more responsibility for disposing of their dog poo bags.

Many thanks to the Q Hotels team from Mottram Hall. They have helped us in the past and it was great to welcome 3 of their staff who came to help us on this litter pick.

We collected a total of 19 bags of litter and other debris. These 2 events were used to support the nationwide “Great British Spring Clean” event which is organised annually by “Keep Britain Tidy”.

9 volunteers met in the Anthology car park on Saturday 10th March. We spread out and covered various parts of the town centre.  The areas around the Railway Station and around Sainsbury’s/the Library were particularly badly littered.  We popped into Anthology afterwards for refreshment.

We would like to thank Anthology for allowing us to use their car park for our town centre litter picks. We really appreciate this.

We collected around 20 bags.

So – we collected 39 bags in our scheduled picks, but there has been a lot of activity recently including a blitz on Burleyhurst Lane in Mobberley and some solo picking by our volunteers.  We have collected 72 bags, since the last month’s report, which is amazing.

Well done and thanks to everyone involved.

Litter Picking Summary 6th + 9th September 2017

We hit some really horrible weather for this month’s litter picks – but still managed a reasonable haul of litter.

3 volunteers met at Wilmslow Leisure Centre on Wednesday 6th September and we collected 6 bags in the surrounding area.

7 volunteers met at Summerfields on Saturday 9th – a very good turnout considering the heavy rainfall. We focussed on the surrounding area including Colshaw Drive and the path down to the bypass. We collected 10 bags altogether.

So – 16 bags in total.

Let’s hope for some kinder weather in October.
