Spring Clean Week 2015 Summary

Wilmslow High School Girls Litter Picking Spring Clean Week 2015Wilmslow Clean Team organised the annual Spring Clean week.  ItWilmslow High School Boys Litter Picking Spring Clean Week 2015 ran from Monday 16th March until Sunday 23rd March.

Wilmslow High School participated during the week.  A group of students went out litter picking 3 times during the week and collected a total of 6 bags.

On Monday 16th March, 7 Clean Team volunteers met at Lindow Common.  One volunteer cleaned Racecourse Road whilst some tackled Altrincham Road.  Some volunteers headed off towards the Honey Bee.  We tackled part of a litter hot spot reported by a member of the public near at the Mobberley Road junction but some of it was too difficult to get at. Other volunteers went down to the Britannia Hotel.  There are some really bad litter problem areas near the hotel – some of which were so bad that we had to call in the council to clear them up. Others are on private land and it’s not clear who we would report it to.  The total haul was around 24 bags of rubbish, TV parts, car parts etc.

On Tuesday evening 5 volunteers met at the Parish Hall and litter picked in the Carrs and the play area. 7 bags and 2 traffic cones were collected altogether.

On Wednesday morning a volunteer finished off some litter picking on Altrincham Road between Racecourse Road and Gorsey Road.  In the afternoon 4 volunteers met at Summerfields and collected 11 bags of rubbish plus various advertising posters, hub caps etc.

On Thursday a volunteer collected a bag of rubbish on Lindow Common including lots of historical litter from the undergrowth. There were lots of drinks cans discarded near the paths and lots of dog poo bags.  The benches in the common attract a lot of littering.  There also seem to be strange goings on with washing powder!

On Friday morning a volunteer went back and finished a stretch of Altrincham Road. Having cleaned this stretch on Monday, it is disappointing at how much new litter has already been thrown from car windows. 4 bags were collected in total.

Another volunteer went back to the litter hot spot at Mobberley Road. He collected 1 bag on Altrincham Road and another in the triangle of land at the junction.

wilmslow clean team spring clean week 2015 town centreOn Friday evening 6th Wilmslow Scouts met at the Leisure Centre and collected 10 bags of rubbish around the pond area. The Clean Team also collected some litter.  This area is a hotspot for laughing gas bottles – well over 60 were picked up during the evening.

wilmslow clean team spring clean week 2015 town centreOn Saturday morning 3 volunteers met at the Coach & Four and litter picked in and around the town centre – e.g. Alderley Road, Sainsbury’s car park, The Library, Parkway etc. We collected 7 bags of rubbish.

In the afternoon a member of the Clean Team commenced a clean up of the Spring Street Multi-storey Car Park (off Water Lane) .  Of the 8 levels , they cleaned the top 3 levels and collected 6 bags of rubbish.  They plan to complete the clean up of this site during week commencing  Monday 23rd March

On Saturday evening a few of us met up at The Coach & Four for a few well earned drinks.

Our last event of the week was a free screening of the film “Trashed” at The Old Dancer. This is a hard hitting documentary, presented by Jeremy Irons, about the problems of waste on a global scale.

Well done to everyone involved.  We worked extremely hard and the town is looking a lot better as a result.

Litter Picking Summary – 4th -> 7th March 2015

Wilmslow Clean Team And Friends Of Lacey Green Park March 20155 volunteers met at the Leisure Centre on Wednesday 4th March and collected a total of 12 bags of litter.
It was disappointing to see the state of the astroturf football area at the Leisure Centre – 3 bags were collected there alone. There was also a lot of broken glass and laughing gas canisters in that area too. The pitch is no longer rented out and it seems that maybe the organisation that runs the Leisure Centre are not taking responsibility for the upkeep of the area.
A lot of litter was found in the border of the Leisure Centre car park and Alderley Road.  Some shrubs have been cut down in this area and a lot of litter was recovered.  We were disappointed by this as we thought that we had removed most of the “historical” litter from this area.
On Saturday 7th March, 5 volunteers from Wilmslow Clean Team met up with a task force from Friends Of Lacey Green Park. We met by the park entrance. The Friends concentrated on the park itself, collecting litter and spraying dog poo yellow.  There is a serious dog poo problem in the park.  The Clean Team spread out around the surrounding roads and paths.  Between us we collected a massive haul of 29 bags plus some other random objects (e.g. the back of a television).  The Friends brought some of their children along.  It was great to see them  involved on this task, especially as they were all really enjoying themselves and thoroughly aware of the problems litter causes.
So – a good start to March with a total of 41 bags collected.
Plans are almost complete for the 2014 Spring Clean Week later in the month – so the monthly total will shoot up.
Well done everyone

Litter Picking Summary – 4th -> 7th February 2015

The 2 litter picks scheduled for February are now complete.

Wilmslow Clean Team Litter Pick The Cars 4th Feb 20153 volunteers met at the Parish Hall on Wednesday 4th February.  2 of them went off and collected litter in the surrounding area whilst the 3rd tidied up the car park and swept up some leaves.  6 bags of litter were collected altogether.

6 volunteers met in the Summerfields car park on Saturday 7th Wilmslow Clean Team Litter Pick Summerfields 7th Feb 2015February. They tidied up the car park and the surrounding roads – e.g. Dean Row Road. Some of the hedgerows in the area, especially on Dean Row Road near Colshaw Drive and bordering the offices and Kids Unlimited nursery are in a disgusting state.  The Clean Team did their best but the trees and plants make it almost impossible to get at some of the litter.  We were surprised at how bad the litter problem was and collected 17 bags which is higher than average. We may well have to organise another litter pick in this area.

Litter Picking Summary – Saturday 12th January 2015

12 volunteers turned out on a very windy morning. We met at the Farmer’s Arms and spread out in all directions.

We collected around 16 bags of litter.

We were delighted to welcome 4 new volunteers – especially one young student from Poyton High School who was volunteering as part of his Duke Of Edinburgh award.

Well done everyone

Litter Picking Summary – Wednesday 7th January 2015

7 volunteers turned out for the first litter pick of 2015 – split into 2 groups.
2 of the volunteers targetted The Carnival Fields, collecting up lots of bags of general rubbish, some larger items and a couple of matressess!
The other 5 met in Bank Square and focussed on the town centre. The areas covered include Church Street, Grove Street, Alderley Road, Grove Avenue, Hawthorne Lane, Manchester Road, Green Lane, Swan street, Hawthorne Grove, the railway station, the Leisure Centre and St Anne`s Parade.  They collected around 6 bags of litter and returned 2 shopping trolleys to Waitrose.
Well done everyone !

Xmas drinks – Coach & Four 22nd December 2014

Wilmslow Clean Team Christmas drinks 2014 at Coach and FourA few of our volunteers got together at the Coach & Four in Wilmslow tonight for some Christmas drinks.  It is just over a year since our very first litter pick.  Despite only having a small number of dedicated volunteers we have had an amazing year collecting about 650 bags of rubbish. We have worked hard throughout the year but we have made time for social events too. The Coach & Four made us very welcome tonight and even gave us a bottle of fizz which we really appreciated.

Happy Christmas to all our volunteers and supporters and here’s to an equally successful 2015!

Litter Picking Event Summary – Saturday 20th December 2014

6 volunteers met in Bank Square on a wet morning for our last litter picking event of the year.  As well as being a busy morning for Christmas shoppers it was also Artisan Market day – so hopefully our presence in the town centre was noticed and we might attract some new volunteers.  We decided to do an hour’s pick today (rather than the usual 2 hours) but we still managed to collect 9 bags of rubbish and the odd hub cap. This has been left in Bank Square for the council to collect.

We covered various roads in and around the town centre including Bank Square, Grove Street, Station Road, Alderley Road and Water Lane.

We all then retired to Hawthorns Deli for a nice warm drink, some cake and good chat.

Well done everyone and hope to see you all in the Coach & Four on Monday night for our Christmas drinks.

Wilmslow Improvements Walkabout – Thursday 11th December 2014

Sally, one of our volunteers, represented Wilmslow Clean Team on a walk around the town to identify problem areas and creating a wish list of suggestions that will make the town look better.  Ansa, Cheshire East Council and Wilmslow Town Council and Incredible Edible were also represented.
Here are a couple of litter related suggestions :
  • Pulling out scrubby, prickly bushes in certain areas where litter collects, and replacing with grass  (e.g. the hedge between the bp petrol station and Alderley Road)
  • Installing new bins near the station.
It was good to hear everyone passing on their thanks for the work that the Clean Team are doing

Litter Picking Event Summary – 3rd -> 6th December 2014

The first 2 of our December litter picking events have gone well – with at least 20 bags of litter collected.

7 volunteers met at the Kings Arms on Wednesday 3rd December.  2 volunteers concentrated on the grounds of the disused Remenham council offices (owned by Cheshire East Council until March next year) – particularly the boundary fence bordering Alderley Road where large quantities of litter had been dumped over the fence.  Various home made advertising boards that had also been thrown over the fence were also collected up.  The other 5 volunteers covered the surrounding roads including Albert Road, Victoria Road, Sainsbury’s car park and the hedge opposite the BP garage.

5 volunteers met at the Honey Bee, on a bright and frosty morning. on Saturday 5th December.  We covered Altrincham Road (between the airport tunnels and Nansmoss Lane) as well as Morley Green Road.  We collected a staggering amount of rubbish, over about a mile of road, considering we have done this area before.  A total of 15 bags of rubbish were collected. This has to be down to people throwing litter out of their vehicles.  In addition to the litter we also collected old road signs and vehicle parts.  It was interesting litter picking with a hard frost – a lot of the litter was frozen to the ground!  It was nice to welcome a new volunteer too.

Our next pick is on Saturday 20th December.
