Litter Picking Summary – 1st -> 4th July 2015

A fantastic start to a bumper litter picking month,

On Wednesday 1st July we had one of our biggest ever turnouts, with around 12 volunteers meeting up at the Leisure Centre and tidying up the surrounding area.

We were pleased to welcome help from a member of staff of car parking specialists, District Enforcement Ltd, who provide parking services for clients in Wilmslow. We hope that other Wilmslow businesses will come forward to contribute to the cause.

We would also like to thank the Northern Rail staff who are helping to keep the station forecourt clean.

One of our volunteers collected more than 100 laughing gas canisters behind the Leisure Centre football area and more around a bench at the far side of the cricket pitch.

17 bags were left at the Leisure Centre and the council were advised to collect

wilmslow clean team and friends of lacey green park liitter pick 1st july 20154 of our volunteers met up with The Friends Of Lacey Green Park On Saturday 4th.  The Friends focussed on tidying the park whilst the Clean Team spread out to tidy the surrounding roads. The area behind the parade of shops was again particularly bad.

Thanks to our ongoing co-operation with The Friends, we collected between us a total of 13 bags of litter, a traffic cone and a bicycle tyre. These were left at the entrance to the park and the council have been notified to collect.

So – 30 bags collected in July so far – and we will also be doing an extra event on 22nd July to help get the town spruced up for the Britain In Bloom judging.

Well done everyone!

Litter Picking Summary – 1st -> 4th April 2015

6 volunteers met at the Parish Hall on Weds 1st April.  We spread out in all directions and collected 10 bags of rubbish.  The locations that we tidied up included the steps from the Parish Hall up to Bollin Hill, the Carrs play area, Cliff Road, Styal Road, Manchester Road, Swan Street, Hawthorn Lane, the Memorial Gardens, Mill Street, the road from the King William down to Polar Ford, and the Leisure Centre.

We collected a lot of broken glass in the skateboard area in The Carrs. We also found over 50 laughing gas canisters near the river near to Polar Ford.  The hedgerow between the entrance to the Broadway car park (near the Leisure Centre) and Broadway itself was filthy.

wilmslow clean team prestbury road april 20156 volunteers met at The Kings Arms on Sat 4th April.  Again we spread out in various directions and collected 11 bags of rubbish. 2 volunteers drove off to Prestbury Road. This stretch of road is always full of litter and we collected 4 bags there.  Other areas covered included Alderley Road (although the discarded duvet near Royal London was a bit too big for us to deal with), the roundabout where Alderley Road meets the A34 bypass and the Spring Street Car Park.

We also ventured into Alderley Edge a bit and tidied up Brook Lane (including the path to the Alderley ByPass) and the public footpatch heading into the fields from the roundabout where Wilmslow Road meets the A34 bypass.

So 21 bags of litter altogether.

Well done everyone.

Spring Clean Week 2015 Summary

Wilmslow High School Girls Litter Picking Spring Clean Week 2015Wilmslow Clean Team organised the annual Spring Clean week.  ItWilmslow High School Boys Litter Picking Spring Clean Week 2015 ran from Monday 16th March until Sunday 23rd March.

Wilmslow High School participated during the week.  A group of students went out litter picking 3 times during the week and collected a total of 6 bags.

On Monday 16th March, 7 Clean Team volunteers met at Lindow Common.  One volunteer cleaned Racecourse Road whilst some tackled Altrincham Road.  Some volunteers headed off towards the Honey Bee.  We tackled part of a litter hot spot reported by a member of the public near at the Mobberley Road junction but some of it was too difficult to get at. Other volunteers went down to the Britannia Hotel.  There are some really bad litter problem areas near the hotel – some of which were so bad that we had to call in the council to clear them up. Others are on private land and it’s not clear who we would report it to.  The total haul was around 24 bags of rubbish, TV parts, car parts etc.

On Tuesday evening 5 volunteers met at the Parish Hall and litter picked in the Carrs and the play area. 7 bags and 2 traffic cones were collected altogether.

On Wednesday morning a volunteer finished off some litter picking on Altrincham Road between Racecourse Road and Gorsey Road.  In the afternoon 4 volunteers met at Summerfields and collected 11 bags of rubbish plus various advertising posters, hub caps etc.

On Thursday a volunteer collected a bag of rubbish on Lindow Common including lots of historical litter from the undergrowth. There were lots of drinks cans discarded near the paths and lots of dog poo bags.  The benches in the common attract a lot of littering.  There also seem to be strange goings on with washing powder!

On Friday morning a volunteer went back and finished a stretch of Altrincham Road. Having cleaned this stretch on Monday, it is disappointing at how much new litter has already been thrown from car windows. 4 bags were collected in total.

wilmslow clean team spring clean week 2015 town centreOn Saturday morning 3 volunteers met at the Coach & Four and litter picked in and around the town centre – e.g. Alderley Road, Sainsbury’s car park, The Library, Parkway etc. We collected 7 bags of rubbish.

In the afternoon a member of the Clean Team commenced a clean up of the Spring Street Multi-storey Car Park (off Water Lane) .  Of the 8 levels , they cleaned the top 3 levels and collected 6 bags of rubbish.  They plan to complete the clean up of this site during week commencing  Monday 23rd March

On Saturday evening a few of us met up at The Coach & Four for a few well earned drinks.

Our last event of the week was a free screening of the film “Trashed” at The Old Dancer. This is a hard hitting documentary, presented by Jeremy Irons, about the problems of waste on a global scale.

Well done to everyone involved.  We worked extremely hard and the town is looking a lot better as a result.

Litter Picking Event Summary – Thursday 16th October 2014

Wilmslow Clean Team Leisure Centre Pick 16 Oct 2014A good turn out on a lovely autumn day in support of the Keep Britain Tidy  “The Big Tidy Up” Campaign that is being held nationwide throughout October.

7 volunteers met at the Leisure Centre.  Most of our efforts were in the Leisure Centre grounds.  Some of the hedgerows were particularly bad although this may be because we haven’t tackled them before and were dealing with a build up of litter over a long period.  We also did some work on Station Road.

Some of the volunteers collected litter on their walk to and from the Leisure Centre.  This included Water Lane, Altrincham Road, Bourne Street and Alderley Road.

We even managed to get together for a mid morning break and enjoyed a coffee outside the Pickle Jar cafe (part of Wilmslow Leisure Centre). The problems we are up against as a team were typified by the behaviour of one of the employees from the Leisure Centre.  She came out of the cafe for a smoke and then threw her cigarette end on the floor just outside the cafe door – right in front of 6 gob-smacked litter pickers!

We collected about 12 bags of rubbish altogether.

Well done everyone!
