Litter Picking Summary 6th -> 9th July 2016

wilmslow clean team bank square litter cleanOn Wednesday 6th July, 10 volunteers (including two new volunteers from Yorkshire Building Society – Michelle and Rebecca) met at Bank Square and collected 14 bags of litter. Some bags of flattened cans were taken away for re-cycling.

The areas/roads covered included Bank Square, Grove Street, Swan Street, Station Road, Green Lane, St Ann’s Parade (and the service road behind here), part of Alderley Road, Leisure Centre grounds (and path behind that leads to railway station), Station forecourt, Broadway Meadows car park,  the un-named link road to A34 by-pass and roundabout by Polar Ford, the passageway between Broadway and Parkway, Grove Avenue, Hawthorn Lane, Kennerley’s Lane, Albert Road, Victoria Road and Chapel Lane.

Other volunteers collected an additional 3 bags of litter in various parts of Wilmslow including Gravel Lane, Knutsford Road and Priory Road,

Many thanks to the Yorkshire Building Society for their help with the litter picking – and their involvement in the dramatic rescue of a hedgehog at Wilmslow Leisure Centre.

wilmslow clean team tesco express litter cleanWe asked Tesco Express if they would arrange to clear the rubbish which has accumulated over many years at the foot of the external fire escape metal staircase. The issue is that litter has been pushed through the railings which guard the staircase, so is totally inaccessible without the gate being open, but which is also highly visible. Fortunately, the gate was open today for some maintenace work. A member of Tesco’s staff, Sharon, took immediate responsibility and said she would clear the litter immediately. 2 of our volunteers, Colin and Chris offered to help, and, between us all, we filled 4 bags (see photo)! Sharon said she would now keep an eye on this area and clean when necessary, each time the maintenance engineer arrives.

Finally, in an eventful morning, another of our volunteers, Sally, picked up a donation of £295 from Waitrose as part of their “Community Matters” programme.  We are very grateful for this money as our funds were running a bit low.

On Saturday 9th July, 4 intrepid volunteers braved torrential rain and litter picked in and around Lacey Green Park.

7 bags of litter were left for collection by the Barlow road entrance to the park and some flattened cans were taken for re-cycling.

So – 24 more bags of litter removed from the streets of WIlmlsow. Well done everyone!

Thanks once again to our volunteers and to the businesses who support our efforts.

Litter Picking Summary – 1st -> 4th July 2015

A fantastic start to a bumper litter picking month,

On Wednesday 1st July we had one of our biggest ever turnouts, with around 12 volunteers meeting up at the Leisure Centre and tidying up the surrounding area.

We were pleased to welcome help from a member of staff of car parking specialists, District Enforcement Ltd, who provide parking services for clients in Wilmslow. We hope that other Wilmslow businesses will come forward to contribute to the cause.

We would also like to thank the Northern Rail staff who are helping to keep the station forecourt clean.

One of our volunteers collected more than 100 laughing gas canisters behind the Leisure Centre football area and more around a bench at the far side of the cricket pitch.

17 bags were left at the Leisure Centre and the council were advised to collect

wilmslow clean team and friends of lacey green park liitter pick 1st july 20154 of our volunteers met up with The Friends Of Lacey Green Park On Saturday 4th.  The Friends focussed on tidying the park whilst the Clean Team spread out to tidy the surrounding roads. The area behind the parade of shops was again particularly bad.

Thanks to our ongoing co-operation with The Friends, we collected between us a total of 13 bags of litter, a traffic cone and a bicycle tyre. These were left at the entrance to the park and the council have been notified to collect.

So – 30 bags collected in July so far – and we will also be doing an extra event on 22nd July to help get the town spruced up for the Britain In Bloom judging.

Well done everyone!

Litter Picking Summary – 4th -> 7th March 2015

Wilmslow Clean Team And Friends Of Lacey Green Park March 20155 volunteers met at the Leisure Centre on Wednesday 4th March and collected a total of 12 bags of litter.
It was disappointing to see the state of the astroturf football area at the Leisure Centre – 3 bags were collected there alone. There was also a lot of broken glass and laughing gas canisters in that area too. The pitch is no longer rented out and it seems that maybe the organisation that runs the Leisure Centre are not taking responsibility for the upkeep of the area.
A lot of litter was found in the border of the Leisure Centre car park and Alderley Road.  Some shrubs have been cut down in this area and a lot of litter was recovered.  We were disappointed by this as we thought that we had removed most of the “historical” litter from this area.
On Saturday 7th March, 5 volunteers from Wilmslow Clean Team met up with a task force from Friends Of Lacey Green Park. We met by the park entrance. The Friends concentrated on the park itself, collecting litter and spraying dog poo yellow.  There is a serious dog poo problem in the park.  The Clean Team spread out around the surrounding roads and paths.  Between us we collected a massive haul of 29 bags plus some other random objects (e.g. the back of a television).  The Friends brought some of their children along.  It was great to see them  involved on this task, especially as they were all really enjoying themselves and thoroughly aware of the problems litter causes.
So – a good start to March with a total of 41 bags collected.
Plans are almost complete for the 2014 Spring Clean Week later in the month – so the monthly total will shoot up.
Well done everyone
